Explore the nighttime world of the Sonoran Desert during a special family-friendly Bug Night at the Hassayampa River Preserve. \nEntomologists from Arizona State University will set up a large illuminated attraction station in the Preserve’s palm grove. The lights are expected to draw dozens of insect species\, giving visitors an unusual opportunity to see regional insects\, arachnids and other fascinating creepy-crawlies up close. \nBetween visits to the light station\, park rangers will help guests search for scorpions and other nocturnal wildlife. Possible sightings could include bats\, snakes\, skunks\, raccoons\, ringtails\, javelinas\, rodents and deer. \nBug Night is sponsored by the Friends of Hassayampa. \nRegistration Required\nAttendance is limited to 50 participants. Register by calling the Visitor Center at 602-506-2930\, extension 9. \nRegistration closes at noon on Thursday\, August 20\, unless the program fills earlier. \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater and snacks\nSturdy\, closed-toe shoes\nA flashlight or blacklight\, if available\nWeather-appropriate clothing\n\nA limited number of blacklights and small flashlights will be available to borrow. Palm Lake Trail\, the picnic area and the Visitor Center are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. \nThe program is open to all ages\, although the darkness and walking may not be suitable for some toddlers or very young children. \nThe Preserve’s entrance gate will reopen at 6:30 p.m. and close after the program at 9:00 p.m. \nOutdoor programs may be canceled because of extreme heat\, thunderstorms or other severe weather.
