A sold-out Paws & Paintbrushes evening brings mystery, generosity and community spirit to Wickenburg Ranch.

The sky brought the drama before the murder mystery even began.

Driving into Wickenburg Ranch on Saturday evening, October 24, we were greeted by ominous black clouds and powerful gusts that sent the celebration indoors. Inside the stylish banquet rooms, however, the mood was anything but gloomy.

Paws & Paintbrushes: Midnight at the Masquerade was completely sold out, bringing more than 100 guests together for an energetic evening supporting the Wickenburg Art Club and K9 Konnection Rescue.

The masks were colorful, the crowd was ready for fun, and somewhere among the partygoers lurked a fictional murderer.

Those colorful masks carried a little extra community spirit: Wickenburg Art Club members and community volunteers helped decorate masks with paint, glitter, feathers and creative embellishments, turning simple disguises into wearable works of art for the fundraiser.

Before the mystery unfolded, guests enjoyed an impressive buffet of delicious food and a full bar, with the Wickenburg Ranch crew keeping the evening running smoothly. From the waitstaff and runners to the bartenders and management, the entire team delivered warm, attentive service to a full house. Masks off to the whole crew – beautifully done!

Behind the Masks, Everyone Was a Suspect

“Choose a mask and wear it well, so your true identity, no one can tell.”

That playful invitation from The Murder Mystery Co. set the scene for an evening of hidden identities, tangled motives and suspicious characters.

As Wickenburg Art Club Membership Director Su Small recounted, “The mystery took an unexpected turn when guests learned that a poisoned mask was behind the fictional death. The victim then returned as a rumpled, Columbo-style investigator, complete with a baggy tan suit and a trusty notepad. Guests became detectives themselves, leaving their tables to question suspects drawn from the dinner crowd and using play money to purchase clues.“Everybody participated and not one person left early. It was amazing,” Small said.

With interconnected characters and plenty of possible motives, solving the case required some serious socializing. The packed room stayed busy with fun mystery, animated conversations and some serious investigations as guests worked to unmask the culprit.

Two Causes Worth Showing Up For

Beyond the entertainment, the evening raised funds for two organizations with meaningful roles in the Wickenburg community: supporting local art and helping dogs in need.

We had the opportunity to meet K9 Konnection Rescue’s first Executive Director Chris Studenka, who offered brief remarks thanking the team and recognizing Laura Gates as the organization’s new board president.

The evening also included discussion of K9 Konnection’s planned property in Morristown, where construction is expected to begin soon. It offered guests a glimpse of the rescue’s next chapter and the work their support will help make possible.

For the Wickenburg Art Club, the evening came as another important project approaches completion.

President Pamela “Pam” Plummer thanked the volunteers and supporters behind the fundraiser and shared encouraging news about the nearly completed renovations at the Wickenburg Art Center & Gallery. Guests heard that the doors could reopen with a newly installed gallery exhibition in November.

A Full House and a Community Thank-You

Plummer captured the spirit of the evening in a message following the celebration:

“What a wonderful evening! Over 100 guests joined us for our Mystery Dinner, co-hosted by the Wickenburg Art Club and K-9 Konnection Dog Rescue. It was a celebration of community spirit, generosity, and friendship, all in support of two wonderful causes. My heartfelt thanks to the dedicated volunteers whose hard work made this special evening possible, and to everyone who attended and supported our efforts. Together, we are making a difference – creating opportunities for art to flourish and helping animals in need. This is what makes Wickenburg such a special community!”

From the volunteers who helped bring the evening together to the guests who embraced their roles, Paws & Paintbrushes gave both organizations plenty to celebrate.

The storm changed the setting. The sold-out crowd supplied the energy. And behind all those colorful masks were neighbors showing up for the arts, rescue dogs and each other.
