Let your imagination run wild during September’s Free Family Friday at the Sigler Western Museum!
Families are invited to the Cultural Crossroads Learning Center for a colorful, hands-on art experience creating mini alebrijes – fantastical creatures inspired by one of Mexico’s most recognizable folk-art traditions.
Alebrijes combine features from different animals to create vibrant, dreamlike creatures covered in bold colors, patterns, dots, and imaginative details. No two are ever quite the same, making this the perfect activity for young artists ready to invent a creature entirely from their own imagination.
The art form originated in Mexico City during the 1930s through the work of papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares. His surreal animal creations later inspired artisans in Oaxaca, who developed a celebrated tradition of carving similar creatures from copal wood.
