K9 Konnection Launches “The Next Chapter”

For more than a decade, K9 Konnection has been giving abandoned, surrendered and stray dogs a second chance in Wickenburg.

Now, the local nonprofit is preparing for its biggest undertaking yet.

K9 Konnection has officially launched The Next Chapter, a major capital campaign to create a permanent shelter and community-centered rescue facility designed around the health, safety and happiness of the dogs in its care.

The campaign began July 1, 2026, and will continue through December 2027. K9 Konnection hopes to raise $150,000 during the first 90 days, followed by approximately $100,000 during each additional 90-day campaign period.

Why K9 Konnection Needs a New Home

K9 Konnection currently operates from a shared warehouse of approximately 2,000 square feet. That space serves as the rescue’s shelter, adoption center, offices and storage area.

As the number of dogs needing help continues to grow, the existing facility can no longer adequately support the rescue’s work.

The current shelter lacks essential features such as indoor and outdoor runs, a dedicated quarantine area for dogs with contagious illnesses, sufficient storage and appropriate spaces where potential adopters can comfortably meet and connect with dogs.

Overcrowding has also become a regular challenge. In 2025, K9 Konnection accepted 282 dogs and completed 248 successful adoptions, but the shelter was over capacity approximately 47% of the year.

A Facility Built Around the Dogs

The proposed new home would be constructed on a 5.7-acre parcel surrounded by Wickenburg’s desert landscape.

The property is level, has its own well and already has electricity onsite. It also includes a three-bedroom, two-bathroom manufactured home that can support the organization’s immediate and future needs.

Rather than creating one large institutional shelter building, K9 Konnection envisions a welcoming complex of smaller buildings, with each area serving a specific purpose.

Plans include:

Air-conditioned indoor and outdoor dog runs
A veterinary clinic
A grooming salon and dog-wash facility
A visitor and adoption center
Walking trails through the desert property
An agility course
A wading and splash pool
Play and socialization areas
A peaceful memorial garden
Dedicated quarantine and medical spaces

The goal is to create an environment that reduces shelter stress, improves health outcomes and gives dogs more opportunities for exercise, enrichment, training and positive interaction.

It will also give adopters a relaxed place to spend time with a dog before making one of life’s biggest and most rewarding commitments.

Real Dogs. Real Second Chances.

The need for a new shelter is best understood through the dogs whose lives have already been changed.

Mo was abandoned in the desert with four siblings and survived on his own before arriving at K9 Konnection. After six months in a patient foster home, he slowly learned to trust people again.

In March 2026, Mo’s future dad, Alex, traveled from Brooklyn, New York, to meet him. After spending a month building their relationship, the two traveled across the country together. Mo now enjoys apartment life, daily park walks and four distinct seasons with his new best friend.

Shadow’s story began along the side of a road.

The two-year-old pit bull was severely dehydrated, less than half his healthy weight and close to giving up. A compassionate person stopped and brought him to K9 Konnection when no one else would accept him.

With specialized veterinary care, treatment for Valley Fever and months in a dedicated foster home, Shadow regained approximately 85% of his health and eventually found the right forever family.

These are the dogs K9 Konnection fights for every day.

Helping Pets Stay With the Families Who Love Them

K9 Konnection’s work extends beyond the dogs living at the shelter.

Its Community Health and Wellness Program helps local pet owners obtain routine veterinary care, behavioral training, dog food and other assistance that can prevent a beloved companion from being surrendered because of financial hardship.

During 2025, the program assisted more than 380 dogs and their families and helped address 11 non-routine medical procedures.

The need continues to rise. K9 Konnection reports that overall community demand is growing by approximately 22% each year, while requests for dog food and veterinary assistance are increasing by roughly 45% to 50%.

A larger facility would give the organization the room and resources needed to strengthen these programs while continuing its rescue, foster and adoption work.

K9 Konnection is inviting individuals, families, businesses, foundations and community organizations to become part of the new shelter’s legacy.

Top Dog – $150,000 to $200,000: Veterinary clinic naming opportunity
Mighty Dog – $100,000 to $149,999: Kennel building naming opportunity
Rescue Dog – $75,000 to $99,999: Advanced play yard, splash pool and agility course
Companion Dog – $50,000 to $74,999: Indoor and outdoor kennels
Pack Dog – $30,000 to $49,999: Grooming salon and dog-wash building
Puppy Pile – $10,000 to $29,999: Special projects such as fencing or turf
Savior – $1,000 to $9,999: Daily enrichment equipment

Sponsors and qualifying donors will also be recognized on a permanent donor plaque displayed in the new visitor center.
